I can’t think of any show that exemplifies the magic a musical can have more than CRAZY
FOR YOU. Ludwig’s fast paced, witty libretto fused with the stunning & timeless music &
lyric of George and Ira Gershwin AND Susan Stroman’s genius, innovative original
choreography makes for a laugh out loud and heart-warming musical comedy that exudes joy.
I’ve been a huge admirer of the work of DYMT over the years and joining as director has
been a similar sheer burst of joy. The show is one of the most demanding I know requiring
every member of the ensemble company to create a fully realised character whilst performing
intense dances and blasting out bold harmonies. The company of DYMT have certainly risen
to that challenge. Working together & seeing them generate such vibrant, over the top and
lively characters has been such a fun and laughter filled experience.
A real joy of the process has been crafting the musical numbers through fantastic
collaboration amongst cast and creative team. A fun challenge frequently emerged in
rehearsals when looking at how all these musical moments erupt so organically and transport
us somewhere magical. I spoke early in the process on how every musical moment should
feel like the classic musical movies we’ve all grown to love. What’s so special in those
stories is the journey we take from naturalistic scenes to technicolour musical numbers. Be it
the vast scale of I’ve Got Rhythm where every prop and aspect of the Deadrock set suddenly
becomes a part of a percussive symphony in a celebration of coming together and making
music. Or the sudden appearance of stunning Follies Girls in a massive tap number escaping
the mundane backdrop of New York to a full all singing, all dancing follies number. Or the
beauty and intimacy of one person on stage singing songs of love and longing that melt your
heart. The show demonstrates the larger-than-life quality of musical theatre like no other.
What you’ll experience today is the dedication, hard work and determination of a stunning
ensemble company & a brilliant team behind the scenes bringing the musical magic to life. A
huge thanks to Caroline & Charlotte for being such fantastic collaborators on throughout the
production and our mammoth production team for being so welcoming and wonderful with
