Matt Powell is a queer identifying director, producer & video designer working predominantly in Musical Theatre, Online Theatre & Queerness.
Over the past seven years, Matt has created & produced an array of unique theatrical experiences. Often working through multiple disciplines, their practice combines cinematic, scenographic styles with embodied movement & music to create visual spectacles. They have an active interest in the representation of queerness in musical theatre both in academia & practice.
Matt has recently graduated from their BA (Hons) degree in Theatre Practice: Performance Arts at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. During their studies, they became the first student to work for MA Music Theatre as Assistant Director supporting the public productions of the 2019 & 2020 cohort. They have also regularly assisted Adam Lenson on STAGES, INTO THE WOODS & various ALPMusicals online events.
Recent work as director/producer includes on hope: a digital song cycle. Matt is artistic director of MPTheatricals: a production company specialising in bespoke entertainment on stage and online.
Currently, they are co-curating and producing MTPRIDE: a series of online events showcasing queer musical theatre. They are directing queered: an ongoing research/performance series exploring how we can broaden queer representation in musical theatre through reimagining, reframing and reinterpreting repertoire & revivals.
Matt identifies as Queer using he/them pronouns. They are a member of Musical Theatre Network. They are currently seeking representation as a director.
